Gaggle of Gatherings 2013

A variety of workshops and field trips that are offered at specific dates and times during the year. Some have been brought back by popular demand, and others are new for 2013.

Rock with the Moores (04/27/13) SOLD OUT
Explore California geology northwest of Davis with renowned geologist Eldridge Moores and his wife Judy. The group will travel from Davis to Capay Valley and the Cache Creek Canyon and back. The Moores hope to take participants away from everyday life as they introduce them to the geological history and challenges of California's dynamic landscape. A picnic lunch will be served along the way.
8am-4:30pm, 20 guests, $65


Ready for a Heady Experience?! (05/04/13)
Spend the evening at the home of Susanne Rockwell and Brian Sway where Dr. Charlie Bamforth, world renowned Professor of Brewing Science at UC Davis, will endeavor to convince you through talk and tasting that beer is far more interesting, far more healthy, far more sophisticated and far more difficult to produce than other alcoholic beverages not to be named! Beer and other refreshments will be served.

Touring the Yolo Bypass from Weir to Weir (05/19/13) SOLD OUT
Have you ever wondered how the Yolo Bypass really works? This is your opportunity to spend a fascinating day with the experts, starting at the Fremont Weir and finishing at the Lisbon Weir. There will be multiple stops along the way including the new tidal marsh at the bottom of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. You'll learn all about the Bypass from multiple perspectives: flood protection, fish migration, rice farming, wintering waterfowl and water transport. Lunch will be provided.

A Day in the Capay (06/02/13)
Get to know one of Yolo County's best kept secrets - the incredible Capay Valley. There will be stops at specialty farms, a vineyard and a local organic farm. We'll finish off the day at the Capay Dam where you'll see one of the world's largest inflatable dams, and the general manager of the irrigation district will present a fascinating primer on how Yolo County farmers get their water.

Mosaic Tile Workshop with Donna Billick (06/22/13)
Create your own nature-themed mosaic tile at ceramicist Donna Billick's Rock Art Studio in Davis. Donna will begin by talking about her mosaic works and community build projects. Then you will have the opportunity to make your own mosaic on a 12" x 12" tile or stepping stone. All supplies provided, as well as templates for wetlands and other nature designs. You are also welcome to bring your own ideas for your unique piece. No experience necessary! Lunch will be provided.

Batty for Bats (08/17/13) SOLD OUT
Be part of an intimate bat experience with Yolo Basin Foundation's own bat expert Corky Quirk. You'll learn about their natural history and biology and even get an up-close look at live bats. As the sun sets, your private party will enjoy fine wines and hors d'oeuvres in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area as you await the spectacular fly-out of hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats.
6-9pm, 30 guests, $50


Rice From Field to Table (10/19/13) Join expert John Brennan on a tour of northern California rice country. Visit fields in the Yolo Bypass as harvest gets underway, tour a rice dryer in Robbins and finally visit a mill in Woodland. Learn about different varieties grown here and where they end up (You may be surprised). Also find out the latest on shorebird conservation efforts by rice farmers. Finish the trip with a rice-centric lunch!
