Join us this fall! Become a Discover the Flyway docent with Yolo Basin Foundation and provide outdoor learning experiences for K – 12th grade students. Help teachers and students from local schools connect to nature, learn about science, and protect wetlands through field trips to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. If you enjoy spending time outdoors with young people, and appreciate being part of a community of volunteers, this is a wonderful opportunity! No experience in education or science is necessary.
As a new docent, you will learn about the natural history of local wetlands, how to facilitate hands-on activities such as Wetland Pond Study, The Great Percolation Race, and Migration Madness, and take a guided tour of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.
Docent training sessions will take place outdoors at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters. Ongoing training continues with opportunities to shadow experienced staff and docents during school field trips starting September 21. Docents are needed for morning or afternoon shifts, Tuesday through Thursday, for the 2023-24 school year.
The goal of Discover the Flyway is to offer children a meaningful outdoor experience that will give them an appreciation for the wetlands, agriculture, and wildlife of the Central Valley.
Dates: September 5, 7, 11, 15 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and September 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
